Weber carb configuration?
Dear MB friends:
Have a newly-installed redline weber carb kit (38DGAS) on my '74 280. I bought this nice, clean kit on ebay some months ago, whose seller said it was previously installed on a 280. Can't get the thing to idle and run smoothly; I was told it was a matter of experimenting with the various jet combinations possible, primarily focusing on the two idle jets. I took the liberty of purchasing a "weber jet pack", a plastic box with a number of jets of increasing sizes; have yet to find a combination that really improves things. The Weber help people told me that the jets that come with the carb kit originally are the ones that are recommended. I've established that the idle jet, for instance, is theoretically supposed to be .045 - that's what I've started with. (By the way, thanks to Catrinus for sharing his info as he installs his Weber.) Now, seeing that this Solex-to-Weber conversion is seemingly commonly recommended, someone out there must have first-hand knowledge of the Weber setup that actually works on this engine. I would love it if someone said "Oh yes- I have that very carb on my 280, runs great, and the jets I'm using are....." thanks, Will |

Have you checked for vacuum leaks?
Did you get all the various outlets on the carb plugged? Is the base gasket sealing? These were all problems I had with my Holley swap. Are you getting air and fuel through the idle circuit? What sort of vacuum are you getting at hot idle?

I am assuming that the manifold vacuum port at the rear base of the adaptor plate is either plugged or it is disconnected for the photograph?

That's actually the front, not the back - the M110's have the carb on the driver's side. Look closely and you'll see the trans on the back of the engine.
What is immediately in the foreground is the vacuum-driven fuel shut-off as well as the big vacuum line that goes to the vacuum pump on the front of the valve cover, which is driven off the end of the right camshaft. I am not making this up.
