w111/w112 engine swap.

I am close to buying a w111 in australia at the moment and am wondering about an engine swap as I was hoping for something with abit more get up and go that the 220.

do all the larger 250 300 and 3.5/v8 engines all fit into the engine bay? how much trouble would there be in the installation?

I just took some measurements for someone else on this forum, who was thinking about a swap for his 220S. I think the M130 2.8 six, as used in the 108 body 280S, would be the easiest swap into a 111. both engine blocks have the same length at 25.7 inches, with the 2.8 block measuring out at maybe 1/4 inch taller. both blocks have the same type of mounting setup. Can't say if you'd need to swap transmissions and don't know about the 3.0 or 3.5.

I think you want to stay away from the M189 3.0 L six. All aluminum and hard to find parts, plus there are many 'versions'. Find a similar 6 cyl like a 250 or 280 engine which will bolt right in.

An M130.983 six cylinder engine out of a 280slc rated at 185hp would fit right in. I have been advised that if you are staying with an automatic transmission you should obtain the mated transmission and adjoining universal joint coupling. You will have to modify the driveshaft by using the later model universal joint and adjusting the driveshaft length. The 1969-70 transmission is a little more refined in technology and shift performance.

M130 from a slc seems to have about 25 horsepower on the m130 out of the 280 se (160hp@5500rpm)
- around 10 - 15 % more power -

what is the difference between the two?

is the slc engine an electronic ignition setup?

I imagine that the slc engine would be harder to find?

would you also know aqnything about the comparitive fuel consumption? 18l/100kms (auto) for the 280se.

I assume it would be better with elec. ignition?

Here's some information from 'Mercedes Benz Production Models 1946-1975' for various engines with DIN Hp ratings. S models are carburetted, all others fuel injected.

220S M180 - 110 hp.

300SE M189 - 160 or 170 hp.

230S M180 - 120 hp.

250S M108 - 130 hp.

250SE M129 - 150 hp.

280S M130 - 140 hp.

280SE M130 - 160hp.

280SL M130 - 170 or 180 hp

280S M110 (twin-cam) - 160 hp.

280SLC M110 (twin-cam) - 185 hp.

Average fuel consumption given ranges from 14L/100km on the 220S to 17L/100km on larger engined models. Add 1 or 2 L/km for automatics.

Mercedes introduced transistorized point ignition about 1970, going to full electronic ignition by about 1975.
