Six cylinder Engine swap

Has anyone out there attempted and completed the process of swapping an M127.984 fuel injected engine for an M130.983 or other 130 series six cylinder fuel injected engine? I am planning for the worst and, rather than just rebuilding my ailing 3 main bearing 134 hp M127, wonder if the 5 main bearing 185 HP M130 longblock engine would be a no hassle fit, i.e. motormount alignment, automatic transmission mating, exhaust attachment, compartment space, etc. My car is a 1963 220SEb with 111 chassis and I understand that the M130 engine was used in 250's and 280's up to 1970. Performance of the M127 is rather anemic and finding one of those M130 engines may make this consideration a mute point!

Your engine has 4 main bearings and the other has a 7 main bearing engine. The 280SE engine should fit right in but you might want to get the radiator from a 280SE. (I'm not up on the M130, what's it from, not one of those POS DOHC engines with no power I hope?)

I have the 120 hp US version M110 in my 280C and it has a very nice exhaust sound.

The M130 six cylinder engines were installed during 1967-72 in the following models:

250SE coupe & cabriolet = M130.923
280 SE coupe & cabriolet = M130..980
280 SE & SEL = M130.980
280 SL = M130.983 (this was the most powerful at 195 hp)
I have seen a picture of one and it looks very similar except for the intake manifold and four line injection pump vs two on the 220SEb M127engine.

Is an M110 engine a fuel injected engine six cylinder engine? Attached is a picture I found of a 250se fuel injected 6 cylinder engine. The intake manifold is quite different from an M127.

I'd like to see it one day Chuck, when the snow clears that is.

OK, so now that I actually looked the engine number up in my Chiltons 1959 - 1970 repair book, it would be a perfect fit. Just get a larger radiator. The engine electrics are a little different and it has an alternator vs a generator. You woudld need the proper regulator which is a perfect fit, I know this because I converted my old 220SE from gen to alt.

Warren,
When you c onverted your 220 from a generator to an alternator did you have to still use the original regulator? I thought most alternators these days were one wire with built in internal regulators. Did you have to custom make the mounting brackets and change the pulley?

Well no actually, I just happened to have a spare engine available and I took the alternator off and the mounting bracket and just swapped them. I used the old style alternator regulator which I mounted in place of the generator regulator. If you get a modern alternator with the internal regulator the wiring will be much more simple.

You don't want to replace the rings in that cylinder?

Isn't the 1963 Mercedes 220SEb Cabriolet rare and valuable in stock form?

Yes, I guess it is considered a collectible. I have made so many subtle modifications, i.e. battery relocation to trunk, wireless door electrical contacts, radiator recovery tank, polishing anything aluminum or brass, anti-theft cutout, remote electrical door locks, poly suspension bushings, later model Becker Mexico signal seeker cassette radio, Nardi steering wheel and etc that it would never be able to be competitive in a car show. Since I don't intend to sell it, deviating from original is not a concern. I just keep making changes that I think will improve the car and enhance my driving enjoyment, like converting to an alternator, adding a center console and repainting it with a technilogically modern quality. I have done the same with all of my cars and, even though they were also considered collector cars, it only made them more desirable to people wanting to buy them.
