My new 79 280SEL

Hope this is the right forum. Picked up this 280SEL yesterday. Hoping to have it running soon, but it's project #4 in line. It may be a while.

Right now, the only issue I know of is the fuel system. System was left to varnish, and if that wasn't bad enough, someone removed the tank, and pump assembly. All kinds of cut lines, so I don't know what goes where. He gave me a new fuel pump, but it's the wrong one. Here's the fuel situation now. yes, I know I will need a new accumulator as well.

I don't know if I can salvage any of this stuff.

Good luck. If time is more valuable than the price of new parts and parts are available, I would replace everything. That looks rough but who knows. We all probably had “rough looking” components which worked fine

Congrats on the project

if fuel is flowing clean and clear through that pump at the right pressure, I wouldn't worry about how the stuff looks on the outside, unless you happen to find some spares.

Just think of how ugly the CIS components under the hood are on the inside. The WUR and fuel distributor are very fussy about contamination. -CTH

I want to replace it all, since the tank was left to varnish. I'm hoping I can get the tank clean, and you bring up a good point. I wonder how the WUR and the fuel distributor are. The car runs fine on ether, but that obviously leaves the whole fuel system off the table.

If the pump is running the only "ware" part in that picture is the fuel filter and the rubber hoses. if it's metal, even if it's ugly, replace it later, not now. -CTH

The Best way to go is to make it run before dumping a lot of $$$$ into it .
If the motor is Not frozen up. I would start with a "pre-Running Compression Check "
You can rig a Temp Gas source and Pump through the Lines to under the hood to a disconnected spot until it runs clear.
How long has it been since last run? .I have fired up Lots of cars that where Pre-Ethanol
with relativity few problems.
With Ethanol about 1.5 to 2 years is about the max you can most times bring them back
without too many problems if you can get it running, once running the New Gas will clean it out in a few hours. Then you can check the compression again to see if it's any good before opening your wallet
