The reason the automatic lash adjusters could cause a low reading is the extra clearance would not allow the valve to stay open for a full breath from the piston stroke.
Hmmm that does not sound clear. Picture the cam shaft lobe pushing the valve open as the piston draws down from its top most position. Now instead of the valve staying open for the entire stroke picture the extra play in the valve train not pushing the valve open all the way and opening later and closing earlier.
Result might be a low compression reading.
I'm still betting on stuck rings though.
