W115: Reverting back to pre-facelift gear shifter

Hopefully someone has done this and can help!

I'm keen to switch my post facelift 1976 gear knob assembly to the pre- facelift assembly (pictured below) as I prefer the look n feel. I have zero clue how to do this and which parts I need other than the actual chrome lever and the boot cover. I've managed to find the MB parts diagram. I'd be very grateful for, and strongly prefer that actual experience from performing this swap is shared!
