Zenith 35/40 Carb Accelerator pump removal ?
I'm brand new to the forum, but I'm an experience mechanic. I'm working on a 1971 MB 250 with Zenith Inat 35/40 carbs. I've got one Carb apart
My question is: How do the accelerator pumps come out ? Special tool ? Puller ? |

I think I was able to make them pop out by pressing them down with the lever and letting them spring back up fast.

Thanks for the response fonzi, but that does not sound like it's going to work on this carb.

One thing you need to pay attention to is that the arm pushing on the accelerator pump is making solid contact on the center pin. The arm can be bent a little bit until it does which should give you instant fuel spray out the discharge nozzle.

My latest update on the Zenith 35/40 accelerator pump problem.
I pulled the Carb about, pulled the check valve out from the bottom of the Accel pump cylinder and stuck a small screwdriver up from the bottom. Accel pump cartridge came out. But during rebuild I found a new problem with the accel pumps not working. I recently purchased a "Walker" carb rebuild kit. After installing the kit parts, the accel pumps did not work. After much investigation, I discovered the Walker pump cups are way too thick so they just stick in the accel cylinders. the Accel pumps look like there going up and down but if you looking though the bottom with the check valve removed, you'll see the cups don't move. I called Mercedes Classic in Irvine Calif, they said the pump cups are out of production. Anybody got a source on factory or correct spec after market accel pump cups ? I'm also in need of one (1) choke plate return spring. Thanks to all in advance. |

Are you talking about the original leather vs the blue neoprene?
Yeah, don’t disintegrate that original leather. The blue neoprene just doesn’t fit and work like the original leather. That’s what I’m told anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I ran into this about 30 years ago. I was told by the shop that sold the kit that the pump was made for several different carbs and it was my job to cut down the new one so it would fit. (!)
A word to those for who it is not too late... Mic out your pump's diameter once you pull it out. You may need that number for later. Just add a mm back in to compensate for wear. And... If anyone has any further info on how to deal with this you will not hurt my feeling by posting it. This worked for me but I was not happy with this solution. |

I have a box of NOS accelerator pistons - leather type. I think I could find them if I spent a bi of time looking.

I'd be in for two, if they pop up.

I found them. The small brass cone is damaged which is replaceable but the leather cup is good. I have 8 units. PM if interested.
