You should also post your questions on the Unimog/Sprinter/Gwagen forum since there will be more informed people over there.

The only explanation they gave me was the vibration cause it and said that could have been caused by anything.

These vans came with a range of engines, from a small 2.4 diesel up to 3.8 or even 4.0l diesel.
In that case all parts are different.
If you can PM me your complete VIN (should be 409 xxx xx xxxxxx), maybe I can dig something up for you, since I am shopping for parts (and researching) my own buses. A lot of it obviously in Germany (I know the language, which makes it a whole lot easier).

Never heard of those bigger engines in the smaller sized vans. I thought the largest diesel they put in the small chassis was the 617. I thought all those bigger diesels went in to the larger chassis vans.

The VIN should be WDB611468 XX XXXXXX. This is 409 D model with OM617 (N/A) engine, 3700 mm wheelbase.

I vote for something on the clutch pressure plate coming apart and getting wedged between the flywheel and bell housing.

This needs to come apart to fully assess damage.

Yes, if there is a problem with the flywheel, those are much harder to come by than a bellhousing.

If I were you and had a place to store it, I would buy this for its parts.

Just take the part number off of the bell housing casing and post it up here - I'm sure we can figure out where to find another.

Any update on this? I'm still curious as to the cause of the cracked bellhousing.

The user's last activity was 2016, if you're curious, see if they allow messaging on their profile, and if they still use the same email they might get an alert.

I cracked a bell housing in a one ton Dodge van. It turned out to be a combination of a failed motor mount, a failed transmission mount, the flexing of the assembly under torque and the weight of a big V-8 pushing back on that torque.

It just got all twisted up and something had to give. It was the bell housing that cracked.

It still ran OK, but I could not get it above 50 without a lot of vibration.
