1971 Mercedes 220d webasto sunroof project

Hey every just bought my first Mercedes and I'm new to these but I've worked on old cars all my life Chevy, gmc, vw and love German cars so I thought I'd purchase this one since it wasn't to much. This my sunroof Mercedes that I bought about 1 week ago it was sitting inside a garage for about 20yrs but then the 2nd owner got the car for parts and luckily he didn't remove everything but it will need a new engine and wiring. I'm really interested in finding out how common were these webasto sunroofs in these early 220d's and if it's dealer or factory option, But the lights and interior pieces will be last, little by little I will put this thing together. If anyone has a wiring harness and a OM616 or 74-76 OM617 they are getting rid of that would be great, I would like a running motor that I can put in it for now, nothing really high in price I dont wanna buy an engine worth an arm and a leg. I'm in California so it has to be close and I wouldn't mind driving to Oregon or Nevada but prefer to get it in California. For the wiring if that can be shipped that would be great.... Let me know what you guys think and any help or info is appreciated. I'll post some pics.

These cars are pretty worthless, with excellent condition examples fetching maybe $8000, coupes maybe $10-12,000, often coupes having sunroofs in that price range. The sedans seem to even less often have sunroofs, and they certainly were an option. Add a manual trans, And you might indeed have a relatively rare option set. But there were a lot of w115 made. It looks like yours is a manual (not power) sunroof, which I think is nice to have one less thing to worry about. I sold a m running and driving sunroof coupe for $2000 but it I didn't feel like dealing with the $500 hassle of obtaining a title. I later saw people trying to sell the same car for $4000 in my Philadelphia area (where I sold it) and then $9500 in California, quickly dropped to maybe $7500 or something), but seriously doubt they ever got those prices for it. I could be wrong. I bought the car for $500 and made it run. Then moved on. Mine were all m130 dual zenith carb cars, and I said "good riddens" to that configuration although I know many others love it. I've never had a diesel.

Anyway, I just want to caution you that w114/115 are some great cheap fun, but unfortunately, despite being a great handling car for their time, the higher end models (and convertibles) are the ones that fetch the money in Mercedes land, and original ones are always most valuable, not modified ones. Still, w114/115 are great fun and very cheap. You may want to buy yourself a parts car to restore that car as inexpensively as possible as it seems there are plenty of them under $2000.

worthless indeed on the resale market, but very much a pleasure to have and maintain (if you enjoying DIY stuff). It's not something you really want to own if you are paying somebody else to put it back together again.

Be sure to use a factory seal on that windshield and get it professionally reinstalled after the headliner is fixed any rust is neutralized and metal painted (and before the dashboard is reinstalled).

BTW, if you need a motor and know what you're doing (read threads here), consider a 5 cylinder to replace the original 4. Unless of course, you're very patient when it comes to getting from 0 to 40.

Cool

yeah i just love the look of these Mercedes, the coupes have a weird body style they may not be worth much now but i figure in a couple more years these will be desirable (like any old car) and everyone will regret selling theirs or junking it. my plan is to put a 5 cylinder diesel in it but if i cant find one i will just put a 4 cylinder motor in it, if anyone has a w115 5 cylinder motor or 4 cylinder let me know (831) 905-9501 . I've already found a parts car for it and that will be one more thing i have to worry about, wouldn't want to take up space so gotta take whatever i need off of it fast..... thanks for the info
