Squeel on 280c
Someone will know what this is. I'm just beginning to work om my 1974 280c in earnest. She's had a hard recovery. She sat for a long time, I've done a lot just to get her running. Carb of course still needs work and on and on....
My question is when the car is in P or N there is a very loud squeel somewhat like a fan belt squeel but much louder, bearings? When I put it in gear, either R or D, the squeel stops. I've tried listening to a screwdriver handle but can't locate the actual source of the squeel. Just sounds generalized in the front. Of course everything is tight up front. Ideas? Thanks guys. |

Does the rpm of the engine drop when you put it in gear? It very well could be a belt, a glazed one, that is pitching at one speed but not at another. Check your belts and maybe even apply a bit of what is called belt-dressing. Belt-dressing is designed to stop the noise given off by glazed belts. It is not a fix, it is just a band-aid on the belt.
But if you shoot some on the belts and the noise stops then just change all your belts as they have glazed due to old age and lots of use. Check your A/C idle pulley, too. I have seen these make a high pitched noise at one rpm but not another. The bearing goes, but you could test this by just loosing it up a tiny bit, that is, taking the tension off the belt a tiny amount, and seeing if the noise stops. |

Tried the belt conditioner. Had come to same conclusion about the air condition pulley trying to get in and loosen pulley it tight. I'll post when I see if that's the cause.
