W115 Stromberg Carburetor Shut-Off Valve/Solenoid Solutions
Hi All,
Another post here. Again, I have a 1970 220, 4 cylinder gas in good strong running condition. The shutoff solenoid is toast on the carb, and as a result I get a bit of dieseling on shutoff as I mentioned my previous post regarding Weber conversion pros/cons. I'd rather not do the Weber conversion if I can tame the Stromberg and get the thing to shutoff properly. HOW might I do this? I head the shut-off solenoid on the bottom of the carbs are basically impossible to find new. Can they be rebuilt? What other methods could be used for to operate such a valve, or cutoff fuel flow to prevent dieseling? A local mechanic suggesting installing a switch that I flip at shutoff--I'm not exactly sure how this would work or what he had in mind, anyone else use anything like this? Again, if the solution gets really pricy I would think about the Weber conversion just to alleviate all these Stromberg headaches... though I'm not sold on the conversion as a true improvement just yet, waiting to hear from someone who has done it. My best. |

have you checked it ? easy to do , remove, apply 12v and ground , should hear a click. If it clicks may be in the wiring to the unit
I dont think they can be rebuilt and I could not find a suitible alternative. They occasionally come up on ebay - I just sold my last one ![]() also look closely at the wire going into the solinoid, often times the problem lies there. That is how I fixed mine removed material around the area, rewired , resealed.

Ron,
Thanks for this. It seems to be shot, but it could be in the wiring right were it enters the unit like you mentioned. I'll spend some more time with it--what other option do I have!? I checked out your long thread on your 220 project. Very, very cool. A great resource, thanks! Trevor |

Ron--Why did you decide to sell it, by the way?

Trevor, as far as I know , there are no alternatives, if you have a dremel tool you can dremel out the end packing ( carefully) to see if there is an issue. Do check it first off the carb to see if it IS working, because there are other issues that can cause a run on
- Why I sold it? of course to get another project, however I can be heard to be muttering those famous words said by every car guy .."Wish I would have kept that one" and I emailed you the article you wanted
