Hello, new guy

Hello,
new guy here. and new to MB cars.
I have always wanted a vintage MB and finally bought on a few months ago.
A 71 300 sel 3.5. Imported from Germany into New york in the 1990s by a Swiss Air pilot. Its a very complete well running car but rusty.
It looks better than it actually is, it would probably be considered a running driving parts car. However, I wanted a crash course in wrenching on one so I figured what the heck. I've done quite a bit of lurking and reading up on this model and various others. I figure I will repair this car until I find something else to get into or until i feel like tackling the rust is worthwhile.

Few pics

It looks good from 50 feet. You can learn a lot on a car like that, although you will find used parts scarce and new parts high priced. So I would try to enjoy it as much as possible as is - and you will find that it was really a great car in its day.

Good luck with your car. Cars are so much better when we know a little bit of the history. Thanks for sharing.

Have you ever posted these photos on the internet before today? Because last week while googling research for my car, I came across the top photo. That exact photo.

Mark, Yea, Ive had those pics up on face book and a few other web sites.

Bobdylan, I know some history second hand but the kicker is that the last owner had a big box full of documetation of the cars history since new. that is now missing.
I bought the car from repair shop that had been stiffed by the PO for the bill.
the owner before him, that lives in Indiana, contacted me after seeing the pics on Facebook when a mutual friend commented on the photo. He told me of teh cars history as I know it and about the missing documentation.

A W109, eh?

Better make sure that air suspension is in good repair, or it will eat you alive.

the air suspension works great.... unfortunately it leaks down. first in the front and then gradually in the rear. I will definitely need to rebuild the valves.

COol car! I was brought home from the hospital when I was born in the exact same year and model except it was green with palamino interior.
Even as a kid, I remember my folks having fits with the pneumatic system. Hopefully you'll get it sorted out!

Yup, see previous comment.

Jim

Note: I had a long term relationship with a 300SEL 6.3.
Probably the MB that gave me the greatest joy and most pain.
You just never knew which one was going to hit you....

Love the W108/W109 cars, but I'd NEVER own one with air suspension again.
