i need carpets

my project is slowly but surely coming together. im at the point now where i need carpeting. most of the carpet in the car is good except the drivers side. both the floor carpeting and the one on the side over the rocker.

does anyone know where i can find these? color isnt an issue as i plan on re dying the interior. i just dont want to pay a ton for these, i see kits for 450-500. thats 50% of what i spent on the car!

any help would be appreciated.

on a side note, the padding below the drivers side is in decent shape, im thinking if i bought a yard or 2 of carpet, i could take it to a local canvas shop and have them repair the mats for me for a fraction of the cost.

There's an ebay seller by the name of "topsandseats" that seems to have a good reputation. GAHH and World Upholstery are two others to check out. Not sure if any of these are in your price range, however.

It's actually "topsonebay" and his stuff is very good. I just installed a set of his leather seats in my W116 and I am very pleased, but more about that later.

When I restored my w116 I was NOT going to do the same thing i did on my W114 coupe, which was to spend several hundred dollars on carpeting and say "this is it?". I think the W114 carpet set me back about $500 and although it was all there, I did not feel it was worth what I had paid.

With the W116 I bought a couple yards of carpet (I can look up exactly how much if you want to know) and used the old pieces as a pattern. There were a few pieces that required me to sew vinyl edging but that was easy enough. I think all told I spent less than $200 on the carpet. I did spring for a nice set of floor mats with the Mercedes logo though.

Thorsen, did you also do the underdash pieces? Also, the carpet you used seems to be more, how shall I say, "bulky" than the factory carpet? Did you use the MB carpet equivalent or pick out what you wanted from a selection of carpets?

Finally, Thorsen, wasn't there sewing required for sections such as the transmission tunnel?

Best Regards,

David

David,

I did everything - underdash panels, center console, floors, rear deck, etc.

Not sure what you mean about "bulky". Are you referring to the fuzz on the carpet - that disappeared when I vacuumed it. If you are referring to the "thickness" of the carpet where the floormats would go then you have a very keen eye. I had a lot of difficulty removing the foam backing for that area from the original carpet - so I just glued the new carpet to the old carpet.

The piece that covers the rear transmission tunnel has a vinyl strip sewn on the front edge but it'd hidden in the above picture as the center console is loosely sitting there. On the W116 it's one piece of carpet over the tunnel.

Here's where I ordered the carpet from: http://www.automotiveinteriors.com/carpet/ydg/material_without_carpet.htm

I can't find the receipt but I want to say I ordered 3 yards (or was it 5?). I got the 80/20 loop with the latex back so it would be easier to form around curves like the underdash panels.

id be willing to try the carpet from the site that u ordered from thorsen. approx how much do u need to do it?

im not really sure if i want to spend 500 on the carpet kits from gahh and world uph because when you read they do not have the plastic trim. i feel like im paying 500 dollars for almost nothing, because ill still have to stitch the carpet to it.

color match isnt an issue as i plan on dyeing the whole interior when im done. i can just mist over the carpeting to make it match.

I've got various used carpet pieces in tan to match the pictured interior--they're from 114 bodies like yours (280 sedans). Send me an e-mail if you'd like photos and a complete parts list.
