Question dome lights

on a 72 280sel, are the front dome lights the same as the rears? I was able to take the rear one off and it looks like its broken...but it also looks exactly like the front dome light but doesn't seem to move (three position) like the front.

The rear dome light should use the same bulb but it does not function as the front dome light, as in it does not tilt to turn it on. The "on/off toggle switch" for the rear light is located on the left side of the dash. The light should also come on with either rear door door open.

Thanks...I'll just get a light bulb in there somehow and get it to work.

W108 dome lights look the same front and rear. Front is 3 position (as with most MB front dome lights) : On - Off - Door. Rear is stationary. Note that front dome light appears to be the same as the dome light in a Jaguar XJS, which makes it easy to obtain at junkyards. It's a very nice dome light. I tried to retrofit that light into my 114 car but even though the opening is the same size, the 114 opening is not as precise and requires a more assertive holding clip than the 108 light provides.
