Smile W108 Daily Driver

Hi Guys,

Its been a while since I looked at this site - and thought Id check in to say something.

I want to thank everyone whos given me advice over the past year or two here - without this EXPERT help, I doubt the W108 would be running.

Ive been using her as a daily driver for almost two months now, its driven atleast 30 km a day. Everything is running really well. The only thing wrong is that it takes a while to start after sitting for more than two hours. It turns over after like 7 or 8 seconds? Longer of a morning.

There is still though, that noise in the exhaust, which Im fairly sure is coming from the master cylinder / compression system. Its only at a certain rev (5x roughly) when accelerating. But these are things which Ill evetually come to..

Thanks again, especially Arthur. The knowledge amongst you all is incredible.

Cheers,
Luke

Hard start after sitting wass a common problem and Benz solved that by adding a 1 second relay for the CSV ..but the same can be accomplished by putting a Momentary On sw. in the cabin for the CSV.

I have that info if needed.

Mine does the same thing - turns over a few times after it has sat for a few hours. Otherwise it starts immediately.

More details with be appreciated Arthur.

OK

CSV is the starting aid designed to fuel prime the engine when cold, but not when warm...this temp switching is controlled with the Time/Temp Switch....[ in water jacket above the FI pump..2 wires]
Benz had problems with a couple of things when car sat or was warm, so they came out with a relay Modification kit to get CSV for one second, regardless of temp..thereby by-passing the TTS control of the CSV.
[This 1 sec relay was actually on earlier original systems, but they dropped it, only to later find out it worked well enough to bring it back as a Mod Kit for the later pumps]
There PES pumps went through 4 version on Starting Aid devices
So , you can order the kit [ and I have that part#] ..OR, as we who know this do, simply can run a wire from the TTS "W" terminal [ pink] to a cabin momentery Push/ON sw. and then ground the other side of that sw under the dash somehwhere.
This allows you to control the CSV manually anytime the Starter is cranking.

The causes that warrant this mod are 3 fold.

These car were known for leaking ball valves at the FI pump..so the car sits and the valves let the fuel drain out of the lines and back to the pump.
[ These ball valves were actually cone valves in the Pre R20 pumps, and can be retro fitted, but costly]
The next is these cars had a problem with vapor lock when they sat and got heat-soaked..this was mostly due to the engine mount not being insulated from the fuel filter mounts. Heat Soak condition . Some guys in hot climates put an insualte block at that mount.
And lastly, when the car is warm, the FI pump is at it's Leanest setting, meaning the WRD is fully closed , so a warm engine is trying to start at a LEAN condition.
When cold or first starts , none of these conditions exist.

Over the years , MFI guys have found a couple of TRICKS, one being the cabin Sw. [ which, if done as I recommend, simply over-rides the Factory system, so if you do not use it, you are not changing anything from stock] .. ...the other is to turn the key ON to run for 10 secs when the car is on a warm re-start BEFORE engaging the starter..this energizes the electric pump to clear the lines of possible vapor conditions pre-start. [ allows loop flow back to tank via fuel return line ]
....and the third is to try a little throttle to get some air at restart..if this technique works, it is an idicator that your car has leaking injectors and is flooding the car after turn-off. \This can also be an indicator of a leaking CSV seat,,,that can be checked at the CSV hex test port to make sure no fuel flows from that port when Elect. pump is ON.

I don't know how clear this all is, but feel free to ask any questions..
I think it covers it........and if any want the Benz Mod part, ask and I will post it ..[ but the cabin sw is my preferred method], as is the 10 sec technique wait vs. installation of a Benz Mod "T" fitting device at the electric pump.

Cool, thanks for the description. Does this apply for the 4.5 cars as well?

I'm beginning to think you end up with 100 extra switches in your cars
