W108 250SE Lower Control Arm failure
Hi,
My lower control arm (LHS) fractured last weekend just as I was pulling up at a set of lights. The fracture was on the inner pivot. I have a replacement control arm and have a query on whether it is possible to remove and replace the control arm by simply disconnecting the stabiliser drop link, shock absorber mount and removing the nut on the bottom of the king pin and leaving the king pin attached to the upper control arm? I would use a juck to gently lower the arm as one side of the inner control arm is still attached to the pivot. I would appreciate your comments and advice. Regards, Tassie Tiger |

Check out my post on lower control arm failure. I would not be surprised if there is more damage.
Good Luck

That is how I replaced mine, although I exercised EXTREME caution and would suggest a coil spring compressor to HOLD the compressed spring if possible (NOT to compress it with, but to HOLD it in the compressed position to reduce the risk of it letting loose).

Thanks for your responses.
With respect to other damage/wear, my intention is to replace the subframe mounts, king pin lower carrier and stabiliser bar rubbers. I will check the pivots on the upper and lower control arms and replace those if required. I purchased these parts some time ago and was waiting on an opportunity to install them. I guess this time has come. Regards, Tassie Tiger |

250SE W108 lower control arm failure
Hi All,
I am in the process of re-assembling the lower control arm but have spent about two hours trying to get the suspension upper control arm/kingpin pivot in place. I simply cannot get the rubber seals to remain in place. Is there a trick or method to get the upper pivot assembled with minimal fuss? I look forward to your comments and suggestions. How did you deal with the spring?

I removed the spring by supporting the lower control arm on a trolley jack, removed the inner pivot bolts and lowered the jack gently. Spring could then be removed. Safety first and ensure you pay attention to the task at hand.
Problem now is to re-assemble the kingpin to the upper control arm and keeping the rubber seals in place. It is a very tight fit. The spring will be returned in the reverse of the removal sequence. Regards Tassie Tiger |

just stick them in place with grease.

Upper outer pivot,
I center the hollow pivot bushing, put the seals at opposing ends, then holding the seals, rotate into place, then slip the camber adjusting bolt thru. |
