w111 A/C
Hello, I'm new to this forum, so greetings to all of You.
Does anybody know where I can buy underdash A/C unit from BEHR or KUHLMEISTER? I have an old BEHR AC unit, but it doesn't look like it should have, so I'd like to find original one. Since I'm from Europe, they are little bit hard to find here. Thanks |

Fintails and early 2-door W111 used the Kuhlmeister, while later W111 2-doors used a Behr, not like the ones used in the W108 cars. If you're lookig for the absolutely correct AC for your car, the units turn up on eBay from time to time, but they've become very expensive.
Happy Motoring, Mark

Unfortunatly, they are! My car is 220seb/c made at the begining of 1965, so I think it should have Kuhlmeister unit. I saw one on Ebay, the price is aprox. $1800, but it's way to much for me, especialy because I have A/C in my car, but I think it is some kind of aftermarket version made by Behr!

I just saw at a '70 Euro 280SE coupe advertised on the 'Cars for Sale' forum, and it had what looked like a Kuhlmeister AC. The Kuhlmeister hang-on units were made in the US by Thermo-King and have a long slim panel with a hard black plastic rim, two vents in the center and small knobs near the ends that match the ones used in the early '60s Fintails
Most of the later W111 coupes/convertibles I've seen with AC used a boxy rectangular Behr unit, with the knobs between the two vents and trim colored to match the cars interior. I saw a '68 280SE coupe on eBay several years ago with a hang-on AC that looked somewhat like a Kuhlmeister, but it didn't have the 'Mercedes' knobs, and while the plastic housing was similar to a Kuhlmeister, the face and finish looked more like many of the Sears, Wards and other aftermarket AC units that were popular in the late'60s and early '70s. All 111 low grille coupes (later 280SE 6 cyl cars and all 3.5) had Behr if it was installed from factory. If you see anything else in those low grille coupes, it is aftermarket.

Well I just saw the picture of that car and it seems to me that the logo sign on that unit is Kuhlmeister. I will send a picture of mine A/C unit, so You will see the difference. I don't really care if it would be Behr or Kuhlmeister, I just want the AC to look like it should!

The factory AC unit found in later W108 sedans and W111 2-doors was by Behr, but it's not inconcieveable for a Euro coupe that didn;t come with an AC, to have had a US dealer install one of the hang-on Kuhlmeisters that were usually found in the Fintails.
On the other hand, 26 years ago, I adapted a salvaged Fintail Kuhlmeister AC into my '61 Ponton 180b. The under-dash unit looked absolutely correct, but I've never seen another Ponton with a Kuhlmeister. That eBay '68 280SE coupe definitly had an aftermaket unit that was neither Kuhlmeister or Behr. IMHO, that early Behr unit, with it's round chrome vents appears to be period-correct for that car. Certainly better looking than the cheap black plastic '70s hang-on unit on the $65,000 eBay coupe posted elsewhere on this forum.
The 'factory' Behr units found in the later coupes, circa 1970, were about the same size, but with rectangular vents, and side trim that matched the interior carpets and upholsery. The only other vintage mid-60s AC unit that might look better would be one of the Kuhlmeister units. Unless there's something wrong with that Behr AC besides the styling, I'd hang on to it. Happy Motoring, Mark

I would keep it too if it was a period piece. On the other hand, it does look a little "odd" with the black near the brown wood and leather. You may consider a completely different modern evaporator like offered by www.vintageair.com They don't have anything specifically for MB, but have very nice sleek underdash units that you may be able to hide out of view.
Viel gluck! Bert

Thanks for answers!
Since I've never seen an underdash unit like mine, I was not shure if it was from that period. I don't know if it works because system is empty, but blower works. It seemed to me like it was from '70s. I think I'll go with Kuhlmeister, it just looks better ![]() |
