1972 250 with issues
My dad's '72 is great. Great style, these cars are unique. The body panels are all good and all the trim is intact and beautiful. The interior is great, the radio works, the car has a great vibe. No wrecks.
However, there are two things: (1) It has a blown head gasket and weakened head wall. The gasket blew and the head wall has thinned to the point of no repair (maybe?). I am not familiar with these aluminum heads in these early cars. It sounds like, from the mechanic, that the head requires replacement and remounting. Any thoughts on whether and how to fix this? The current bid is $2,700 for the repairs (2) The tranny slips. My dad lives in San Francisco, so this is a real deal. The tranny needs to be rebuilt. The best price, so far, is about $2,700. Any thoughts on where to go from here? I like the car, but throwing close to $6,000 into it seems borderline nuts. The sum of the parts is probably worth some dough, but I am not crazy about tearing apart a solid car (except for #1 and #2). I am not a vintage Mercedes guy and don't have alot of good advice, but know that some of you will have some. Thanks a bunch. Have a great weekend. Jon |

buying a used motor+transmission and having it installed should be a fraction of that. There are plenty of dead cars around. -CTH
