Is it possible to replace the fan clutch on a '71 280 SL without removing the radiator? It does have a/c.

Speaking from experiences with the coupes and sedans, you can remove the shroud attached to the radiator as well as the fan from the pulley. Then lift both items out of the engine compartment.

Like I said, I've done it on the sedans and coupes. The 280sl should use the same technology, but no guarentees.

A trick is to put a flat piece of cardboard on the surface of the radiator for protection when working on and withdrawing the fan.
I remove the hood , but you don't have to. There is also no shroud to contend with. |

Definitely remove the hood!
Makes the job much easier and the removal of the hood is a simple job. Just be careful with it and of course have a helper with a steady hand! Also, when re-installing the hood, be very careful so as not to scratch the front clip or the hood itself.

If you need to remove the radiator, it will come out the bottom eliminating the need for removing the hood. Not a big job. There is lots of room underneath.
