A boxer motor? wow...
I think he is going to have to find a cap rotor and wires, before he can fire it up. Too bad the pics aren't a little larger. I doubt it's from the early 1900's though.

I seem to remember that Mercedes made a rear engined car, similar to a VW beetle, in the 1930's. It was called a 170H. The H stood for the German word for rear engine. They were made in very small numbers. I would contact the MB classic center in Stuttgart for more info, you have museum piece there. What a nice find. I hope this helps. John.

john is right about the 'heck' motor. there were very few of them sold so if that is what it is it will be quite rare.
i think the first boxer bmw cycle engine was before 1920. it was a flat head iirc, so this could be a follower of that. tom w

Tiger,I was born In NZ ( TeKuiti) and we had a lot of those motors, let me assure you it is neither a Rare Engine, nor is it a Mercedes Engine ( mercedes, named in the 20's, is the brand name of Daimler -Benz,then Chrysler) what you have is a Jowett "Bradford" Engine made in the UK . Jowett , the spiritual asncestor of the Subaru, were making water cooled boxer engines in the javelin and Jupitor cars, again many of which survive in NZ today.
This is a bradford van made right up to early 50's it was lot newer than it looked. ![]() http://jowett.faithweb.com/catalog.html Last edited by mercmad6.3; 06-21-2006 at 07:13 AM. |

If you haven't been able to confirm the source of the motor yet, contact the mercedes classic center in Anehiem. They would know from the photos. -CTH
