"Heckflosse"/Fintail cars
I am helping a good friend of mine locate a diesel fintail. We have looked at 2 thus far, and havent found the right one yet.
Could anybody tell me if MB put a diesel in Fintails with the stacked headlights? The stacked headlight cars seem better proportioned to me, the hood looks longer and sleeker, and the headlights fill the front of the fenders nicely. So far the 2 cars we have looked at have been questionable. The first car was a 1968 200D- The interior was flawless, but the exterior was suffering from some rust.. the bumpers had rust holes, and cracks and crevices were also marred by rust. In addition, the owner was asking $11,000. INSANE. It did have the rare sunroof though. The second car was a Palm Springs resident- a 1967 200D, and its body is rust free and in nice shape. Paint has some light oxodizing, and the interior is nearly flawless. HOWEVER, the seller (an MB tech) has the engine out and is haviing it rebuilt. He plans on having the engine back, and a new transmission in by 3 weeks. He is also going to go over the brakes and suspension and have make any necessary repairs. He is asking $7k. Both cars though have the typical short front end and single headlights. Which are just fine, but if there are any stacked headlight diesel fintails out there, thats even better! Did MB make any?

Mercedes did not produce stacked headlight diesel models.The stacked headlights were only featured on 220,220S and 230S models.The 200,200D and 230 also 190 were round lights.I heard that the 200,200D,190,and 190D are a little slow on the acceleration and are laggers on the highway.I could be wrong.My '68 230S (sold) was a great runner.Always performed great on the highway.That same car is for sale and I can get you partnered with the owner (who is also a member on the forum)if your interested.

you could do what Walter Klatt did, and mount a 2.5l diesel in an older car. He used a 230sl as the receiving chassis, but the idea is the same.

Yes the 200D series cars are very underpowered... the 1968 model we looked at was slow, but once it got going it could keep up with most traffic. My friend had a 1978 240D, so hes used to going slow, and the car isnt going to be used for more than a wvo powered around town car. Hes looking for the nicest diesel fintail he can find, has no set budget. I LOVE the stacked headlight fintails.. they look gorgeous! Id love to drop a 617 turbo into one!

In Europe, I've heard, it's not uncommon to transplant one of the 5 cylinder diesels into older six-cylinder gas Mercedes.
Many years ago, while driving through Leesburg, Virginia, I stopped to look at a roadside Fintail that was for sale. It looked like a 220b, with the long front end and stacked headlights, but it had a 190 badge on the trunk. To my suprise there was a 4 cylinder under the hood. At first, it looked like someone had transplanted a 190 engine into a 220, but visible welds underhood suggested that they actually transplanted a 220 front end onto a 190! Happy Motoring, Mark

68 230S for sale
No it is not a Diesel, but a very nice gasoline powered 6 cyl beauty that I am going to sell .... new tires and starter, good interior, excellent outside and inside ... if anyone is interested in a nice "Fintail" model.
