W140 Blower Regulator Problem
Hey Everyone!
I wass referred here by a fellow BenzWorld member. This is an awesome site! There are some REALLY knowledgable people here! Anyways, I have done some search around about my climate control blower problem. Here is a description of my problem: First off, when you have the climate control set to a cold setting, it does indeed blow cold air. . . that is not the problem. The problem is that, when the A/C is on, the fans seems to power up and power down by themselves. I set the fan speed to "max" and took a drive in the car. At first, all was fine . . . the A/C was blowing nice old air at maximum speed. However, after driving for about two minutes, then fans all die down until they pretty much shut off. When you come to a stop light, as soon as you stop, then all of the fans suddenly kick in again at maximum speed; however, as you start to drive again, then all of the fans shut down. Some people say that simply replacing the cabin filter can fix the problem, but if this were the case, wouldn't I be able to hear the fans blowing hard, but feel no air blowing in the cabin (due to a clogged filter)? Which leads me to believe that it is the infamous blower regulator problem. Can anyone help me out before I go buying parts? My problem seems similar to everyone elses except that my blowers actually work when the car is standing still at stop lights . . . This is so confusing Thanks for the help guys! Bryan |

My guess is that you either have a bad blower regulator (replaced mine last week) or your pushbutton is on the fritz.
Since the 140's are known for their weak regulator it is probably a safe place to start. I found one on Ebay brand new for $149 shipped. Very easy to replace. Less than 15 minutes and a phillips head screwdriver. Email me and I will be happy to hook you up with the guy that sells them. I believe that they are $375 list but these are NIB for $149. Brian |

That would be awesome if you could hook me up with this guy
From what I have read, I am thinking that it is the blower regulator as well. I am going o try replacing the pollen filter first to see what that does though. I figure it can't hurt to replace the pollen filter anyways. But, I will probably end up getting the regulator. Please give me his Ebay ID and email address, and I'lll see if he can sell me one. Do you know whether or not the part is OEM? Also, when your regulator quit, did you have the exact same symptoms that I wrote above? The fans would kick in to high gear when the car is standing still? Thanks so much for the help! Bryan |

Sure thing...Go to ebay and type in this item number in the search Item number: 2481004949 . These are IDENTICAL (KAE OEM) to the one in yor car now. There is an upgrade to this one (BEHR) but it does cost quite a bit more and you can only get it through a few sources.
As far as the filters go....The main filter must be removed to replace the regulator. Throw it away and put in a new one. Also, under the passenger side footwell there are additional filters. Replace those as well. I beieve I used my own filter material on those that I cut from 3M material purchased at Home Depot. It sounds as if your regulator may be overheating and cutting out but who really knows. Try taking out the filters all together before replacing the reg and see what happens. My regulator actually didn't quit. I canabalized it off my W140 to repair my no longer available W210 Regulator. Long story..... The W210 regulator was stolen at the auto auction. The original W210 regulators are like gold because they are no longer available and you must purchase the entire $1000 setup. Good luck! |

Is this EuroPartsDirect that you bought off of? I would buy off of them too, but it says that they only ship to the US, and Puerto Rico, and I live in Canada

Ooooo . . . good theory about the overheating!
It would kind of make sense that it would overheat when we start driving, and then cool off when we come to a stop light . . . I will definitely be looking at the filters tomorrow. I am guessing that they have never been replaced as the car only had 25000 miles on it when we bought it 6 months ago. Thanks for yor help! Bryan |

Sure is...Try calling them and I'm sure they will work with you. I was very happy with them as they shipped within 1 hour of me placing my order. Had the parts two days later.

Yeah, I emailed them and I'll wait and see what they say. Inoticed that there is a Behr for sale for $250, and I have read in other posts that this regulator is more reliable and lasts a lot longer. I wonder if it is worth the extra money? People say that you have to replace the KAE one once every few years . . . but if it's only half the price, then it might still be a good purchase (especially considering how easy it is to install).

And I know what you men by the 3M pads
When I worked at a cabinet shop during highschool summers, we used those things a lot And we also used them as filters around the shop I wonder if there is anything special about the OEM filter compared to a 3M pad . . . Regards, Bryan |

huh....didn't think of using those. Looks like a good solution though. The 3M filter I was actually referring to is the one that you put on top of your standard air filter in your home. It is blue on one side and white on the other. Works great for filtering dust and VERY cheap. I think one package can be used about...50 times.
My KAE lasted 10 years and was still going. Be sure to clean the mounting surface very well and follow the torque instructions. You want a very good contact to dissipate the heat. |

Oh, now I know the filter you are referring to
I think both would probably work fine Yeah, if the KAE asts 10 years, then it is probably the way to go. Other people on the board made it sound as if they only last 3 years maximum . . . Regards, Bryan |
