Looking for KeBowers! W140 Wire Harness info...

A while back I found a great thread written by KeBowers regarding wire harnesses in S600's. I can't find it! KeBowers, are you still out there? Can you share with me what to look for in my 1995 S600? I'm getting intermittant Check Engine light from time to time. Suspect M16 or CAN wirirng. Thanks!

wiring harness

I responded directly to question. Wiring harnesses still failing all over the country. My sl-600 still in limp mode until I can gather up courage to tackle the beast. Got it down to the coax cable to one multiplug in the computer cabinet. Wire checks low resistance to ground at first, slowly (hours) returns to OK when the bend is relaxed. Now how to repair that without disassembling the entire car?

Thumbs up

Thanks Keith. I got your e-mail. I appreciate the info and the rapid response. This wiring harness issue brings back fond memories of an old 1968 Cadillac I had. Driving home from school at midnight, the passenger compartment filled with acrid smoke, and fast. I coudn't see a thing, and thought for sure I was going to plow into something. Pulled over safely, and actually got the car home after things cooled off. It took a long time to splice new wires into the main firewall harness. I really look forward to doing this again

KeBowers, I had a chance to pull off access covers and look at the wiring harnesses. In some of the wire trays, there are 2 or more groups of wire bundles. Some of them look very new, while the others look more like originals. The insulation on the older appearing wires is OK, thank goodness. I'm guessing someone changed the harness(es) on this car in the past. One less thing to lose sleep over. Thanks again for the info!

You might be interested in this. When I was at Pinnacle Automotive checking on the SRS lite, Steve mentioned that the wiring harnesses have insulation that breaks up after some time. He showed me where the wires going to the crank sensor were completely bare at the short section between the sheath and the connector. Hard to believe that MB would use such inferior insulation on the wires.

Can you describe the location more precisely, or better yet, do you have a picture of that akaras? I'd like to see that.

On the 104 engine (3.2 L) this crank sensor is at the top of the engine in front of the valve cover. Three wires running to it with a plastic connector at the sensor. The connector body appears to be cracked and is hanging on by the wire terminals. I definitely plan to have that harness replaced. I'm told the wire insulation deteriorates inside the wire sheath till eventualy they short.
Hope that helps.

Well, I spoke too soon. I am in the process of trouble shooting my ADS, and while I was under the hood, I decided to take a closer look at the wiring. I pulled off the wire trough cover, and cut away some of the wire wrap tape. I saw cracks in the insulation of one of the wire bundles. This is the bundle that includes wires going to the throttle actuators. A previous owner definitely changed 2 of the 3 bundles, but clearly not this one. I'm really looking forward to this job . I'll be calling Phil soon. If any of you have tips / pointers, I'd really like to hear them.
