Help with gray market part

I have a wonderful 1985 300d non turbo imported from Germany the transmission blew I am trying to find a transmission from a car sold in the states. The transmission is model # 123 270 56 01 722 405 02 158713 I can’t afford a rebuilt so I am looking for something I can get from a wrecker. The transmission has a mechanical speedometer cable its ok if I have to switch parts between tyranny’s to get it to fit any help would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is that the American version will fit,you might try and call Sun Valley Mercedes near LA they sell both rebuilds and used trannies and could tell you about interchangeability..........

1981 was the last year for the 300D non-turbo in the US in the W123 body. The turbo has a heavier transmission, and not sure if it will bolt or connect up to the engine. I would guess that if the turbo transmission will not work, then the one for the non-turbo from 1978 to 1981 will work.

1985 was an odd year for US-spec Diesels in that they had different transmissions. I'm not sure if that means different gear ratios only or won't interchange as well. Might have been an odd year for Euro Diesels as well. Further confusing because an 85 Euro can also be a W124.

I'd cross my fingers and go with something out of an 85 300Dt or TDt. If Nitske's accurate, the ratios are only off in the second decimal in first gear.

still no luck

Junk yards I have spoken to have led me to belive that because it is a six bolt pan it was never used on a car in the states. Any one no of a wrecker in germany that does business with customers in the states?

Try Ebay. Or, Mercman, a UK breaker specializing in MB's.

Unless seasonal pollen is affecting my memory I've worked on the following: 81 300SD, 83 300SD, 87 300SEL, 91 300SE, 95 S420 -- all have 6-bolt transmission pans.

The cost of getting a transmission from overseas has to be greater than ~$1200 for a carry-in rebuild.

If a 722.315 from an 85 300D doesn't fit your car, I'll pick it up from your garage and take it back to the yard for you. Lots of caveats on that offer so ask first

Answer

Call Peter Schmid transmissions in Mountain View Calif.

They have specialized in MBZ for years and are the best.

Telephone book.
I think Ian is the manager. Schmid's son works there also.

That should be a 722-315 6 bolt, I belive any 722 -3 series transmissions will bolt in there may be some slight internal differences or different gear ratios but would guess they would be minor........

Maybe Peter Schmid transmissions moved to Sunnyvale or changed the name??

try a web search.
Most local shops farmed out to him so they probably know where his shop is located now.

I think Peter Schmid is in Burlingame now. I saw his shop on Rollins Rd a couple of years ago. There's a listing at zip2.com
