Question 82 240D gearbox

I have a 82 240D with a sloppy gearbox. I found a tight one at a junk yard and I'm getting ready to install it. I found that the steering arm for the replacement wasn't identical to the original one and managed to take it off - I'm still working on removing the one on the car. I may have to disconnect the linkage and remove it once off the car. My main question is whether the connection on the steering column where the allen wrenches are used slides up once loosened. If it did, that would make installation easier for lining up the steering wheel splines more exactly. That gearbox is pretty damn heavy! I'm hoping I can attach it to the car and THEN mess with lining up the steering wheel.
Thanks,
Ralph Sandmann
