400E Owners, What’s Your Gas Mileage

It seemed my gas mileage was falling off, the plugs indicated a rich fuel mixture, checked the Oxygen sensor it was bad, so I changed the sensor and installed spark plugs. I’m going to start checking my gas mileage for city, city/highway and highway, which I have not done for several years; I use to always post my gas mileage on ever fill-up.
So I was wondering and would appreciate if you 400E owners could post your current gas mileage on your 400E’s, and how many miles on your auto, and if you have the history of what your average gas mileage was your first year. Thought it would be interesting in knowing what each of our 400E’s gas mileage is and how it has changed.

Thanks, enjoy your drive, timreid

I am getting 12L/100km (20mpg) for 50/50 highway/city drive, for 100% highway cruising, I get 10L/100km (23.5mpg), I use Sunoco 94.

It's much worse than that in winter.

carman850, that's good gas mileage, our mpg is about the same, mine went down 16 to 17 mpg, since my repairs I hope it goes back up. Has your mileage gone down with mileage and how bad is your mpg for winter driving in all that snow?

Concerning Sunoco gas, my old BMW friends would never use Sunoco gas, it had something to do with the blend and it would in someway harm the engine?? well that thought must have been totally wrong, with 220K KM on your 400E.

enjoy your drive, timreid

When I fitst got my 400e (about a year ago), I couldn't get better than 16.5 MPG on a full highway trip! For quite a while I've been getting no better than 15-15.8 MPG mixed hwy/city. Now that I have a new job that has a significantly longer commute I've gotten as high as 19.35 MPG - I think the longer commute (10 miles city 17 hwy) must have loosened up some crud - my commute before was nearly an equal mix of hwy/city just not quite as long. I've been using 91 (no 92 in So Cal) octane - mostly Chevron. I now have 60.5K and did around 8K this past year.

My girlfriend has a 400E - it gets 17-18 in a suburban environment and will return 22-23 MPG on the open road. The car has a 2.24 rear whcih really helps things on the highway.

I'm amazed that a car with so much power on tap is capable of getting low 20 MPG numbers on the highway.

I agree wih a previous poster about winter mileage -its quite a bit worse. Turning on the A/C also seems to hurt mileage much more than I would expect.

I have consistently gotten 20 mpg in town and 25-26 in sustained highway driving, in each case with AC running.

I have 128 k miles on the clock and so far no change in mileage over the years.

Angry

hi guys i have 400 e for almost 2 years now but i have never experieced anything more than 16.5 mpg i m amazed by ur cars when i m the only one with original 50,000 miles i use sunoco too 94 once a week and usually 93 why is that mine is also a 92 manufactured came out on road in 93 i have never replaced teh o2 sensor yet dealer says that when i reach 60000 miles i should get that service done and they will be able to replace teh sensor i just changed that little sensor in the air intake pipe a month ago but still i havent noticed any change in teh milage
should i get the o 2 sencor before getting to 60000 miles inorder to get better milage
one more thing my cars idle gets jumpy mostly in rain no one has figured out the reason so far have taken it to the dealer twice both times they said that the supressor switch were bad and they replaced teh bad ones twice they have replaced the spark plugs but the problem presists teh funny thging is this that it usually wont do that sometimes but its really annoying when it happens though what do u think guys this small problem might be the cause of poor(or bad) fuel milage i would love to c 20miles in my car tooo...... im so jelous (just kiddding)
thanks
400e RULES all the way..........

My 400E has 69k miles, I usually get between 17 and 20 mpg depending on how I drive. The lower the miles per gallon, the higher the smiles per gallon.
