Thinking of rebuilding a 450SEL suspension myself ...
I have average mechanical skills, and am contemplating rebuilding the 450SEL's suspension myself. But I've never rebuilt a suspension of any sort in the past.
* Is this something the neophyste should steer away from? * Does the MBZ, because it has sealed grease fittings, require a different set of installation and removal tools than the standard suspension? * Roughly how much might the bushings end up costing? * What do you think of polygraphite vs. rubber? Suspension work can be done by an average DIY type, but any suspension work has the potential for serious injury. Depending on what you plan to do, you may have to compress the springs for removal, doing so without the proper compressor could be fatal. Some work can be accomplished without removing the springs.
There are some special tools that may be required, but this isn't because of sealed joints, it is because of the angle if insertion to the spindle. As far as costs, you can figure it out by shopping through FastLanes online catalogue. For instance, I can replace almost everything on the 126, except lower control arm bushings for less than $550.00 (includes shocks and steering damper). How to figure out if beyond your abilities? Buy the manual and read. You are the only one who can tell if the job is within your ability. Rubber v. poly. I'd stick with rubber, unless you're racing.

Do it!!!
I just finished rebuilding the front end on my w126. Not too difficult, just a bunch of grunt work. It cost me 1/3 what a well respected, independent MB shop quoted me. For me, one of the best things about doing the work myself was the confidence I gained and the sense of accomplishment. Next on my agenda are Eibach springs and 17" wheels.

450 SEL suspension rebuild
I rebuilt everything in the front end of my 300 SEl about two years ago. You will need a special tool to press in the lower ball joints. You can rent one from Performance Products (an aftermarket parts supply house). You can purchase a universal spring comp. The old lower ball joints need to be pressed or driven out. You acn make up a rig for removing the old and pressing in the new upper and lower control arm bushings (a drill press comes in handy for this). I bought all MB parts from Tom Hansen (MB dealer in L A) for around $500. It is doable but not easy allow a week if you do it after work each day.
