1991 SL500 with 120k, which service should I be looking at?
Ive got a 1991 SL500 with 120k miles on it and was planning on bringing it in to the dealer for whatever service is needed on it, along with an oil change and whatever fluids need to be flushed/refreshed.
Can you guys give me a run down on what the dealer should address at this mileage interval. I just got the car and am not sure what has been done before, and I dont mind if the dealer goes crazy and does everything, I just want my baby running perfect. Also, what is the ballpark price I should expect from this mileage service? Thanx guys!! |

The 120,000 mile service is a major 60,000 mile maintenance service. In addition to all of the following performed, there are two (2) other services which are not performed on mileage intervals, but are performed on time intervals instead:
Brake Fluid - replace every two (2) years. Radiator Coolant - replace every three (3) years. If these weren't done within the last 2 or 3 years, then they will have to be added to the following list: Adjust Parking Brake Check Operation Of Lights and Accessories Clean Antenna Mast Function Check A/C & Heating System Inspect and Lube Throttle Linkage Inspect Belts and Hoses Inspect Body For Paint Corrosion Inspect Brake Pads and Discs Inspect Drive Shaft Flex Disc for Wear Inspect Exhaust System Inspect Parking Brake Cables Inspect Suspension and Steering Components Inspect Wipers and Washer System Lubricate Door Hinges Replace Air Filter Replace Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid Replace Engine Oil and Filter. Replace Fuel Filters Replace Spark Plugs Retighten Steering gear Bolts Set tire pressure, Rotate, and Balance Wheels Top Off All Fluids

I don't know what a dealer charges, but I have a flyer from a local Mercedes Independent, and their price for a 60,000 mile service on an 8-cylinder model is $529.00.
This, of course, does not include the break fluid change nor the radiator coolant change as they are done in time, not mileage. You'll have to add those if you need them.

The dealer wants $641 for this service, but its my baby so Im going to go ahead and do it. The car's previous owner had the plugs, cap and roters done rigth before he sold it to me, so the dealer said they would subtract for this.
I think Im going to have a huge bill my first time out, but Im expecting it, you always have to pay some money when you buy a used auto. |

Take my advice - don't forget to include the brake fluid change and radiator fluid change if you have no record of when they were last done.
They are not automatically included in the 120k service, or any other service for that matter, as they are done in time increments instead of mileage increments.

When would a timing chain/tensioner/upper guide rail replacement be appropriate for this model?
