C220 Steering Wheel Removal

Does anyone know the torx bit size for the 2 screws that attach the horn/airbag to the steering wheel of a 94 C220. I need to remove the wheel to get at the combination switch and also to remove the instrument cluster for replacing a bulb. I probably will have to make or buy a special long shaft torx driver since these are in a deep recess and I want to be sure I have the right size. In what appears to be an affront to the DIY world, MBUSA has chosen not to publish any of the manuals for this model even 8 years after production start.

Thanks,

Okiebenz

Hey there,

If it is the same as the E series, it is a T30 Torx. The screwdriver style Torx set available from Craftsman includes this size, cost is about 10 bucks. MB sells their tool for about 4 bucks. Check your CD manual for the part number. (if you dont have one, get one, well worth the $$$).

Just extend your steering wheel all the way before disconnecting the battery, and this tool should fit in the space available. If not, just cut the handle short enough or rotate the wheel.

The steering wheel nut is probably a 10mm hex. You will need a 1/2 inch drive socket with a breaker bar to remove it. Have a strong helper hold the wheel to prevent damage to the steering lock mechanism.

There are quite a few threads worth reading on the subject.

Thanks Happy for the feedback. You mentioned "check my CD manual" -- do you know where I could purchase one? I have checked MBUSA and they do not publish a printed manual or a CD version for this model. Same for Chilton/Haynes.

Purchased a cd manual from ebay made by Mitchel epair information for the
C220.

It is fairly complete and it was inexpensive at $8 for 2 cd's plus shipping.
