Stu Ritter, the technical editor of the Mercedes Benz Star Magazine, has written extensively on Mercedes Benz coolant and why it should be used. There are many reasons, but one imortant one is that MB coolant has a neutral PH. Other coolants do not. Other coolants will cause MB rubber and gaskets to degenerate.

The Zerex G-05 is now available at most Autozone Stores and is recommended for all Mercedes as a direct replacement. I just replaced the A/F in my 95 E320 with it, it looks identical in color to the Mercedes brand and is only $7.99. Try it, you'll like it!!!

Geez, with the warnings from Mercedes Benz about only using Mercedes coolant, I don't know why anyone would risk a car that is worth tens of thousands of dollars trying to save $3 on a gallon of coolant. A gallon of the yellow-ish Mercedes coolant is $10 or less.
I'd like to know who claims Zerex is a direct replacement for MB coolant. Mercedes or Zerex?

Geez Paul, just because it's not sold by Mercedes doesn't mean it's not a great product. Do a search on it using google or go to valvoline's web site. It's right there Paul in black and white!!

I think I'll trust Mercedes before I trust the claims of Zerex or any other company.
I was just reading a loooong article in the Star Magazine about the unique properties of MB coolant and why you should trust nothing else.

Not here tkamiya, I'm just trying to inform of a new product that is now offered by Zerex that cost a few dollars less and is approved by Mercedes, not to mention it is easier to obtain in my case. (There are AutoZones all over the place here) Hey, I've got an idea, why don't those who are interested in educating themselves go to these sites and read for yourself.
Ok, I'm done now...... www.imcool.com/articles/antifreeze-coolant/G05-Glysantin.htm http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/product_detail.asp?Product=10 Dale |

Why take a chance, stick with the MB coolant or whatever the owner's manual says.

Jet,
I think I'll buy a gallon tomorrow and see what I think. If its the same, its the same. I dont care what the jug looks like. Thanks for the links and the heads up. My clients love to save a little cash here and there even if it's only a few bucks. I will research it though before I use it. Brian

Brian,
I have some Mercedes A/F that was leftover from last years A/F change in my car, and they are identical in color. I know that color doesn't tell the whole story, BUT........I find it hard to believe that a company the size of Valvoline would risk litigation with Mercedes on a topic such as anti-freeze by touting it's approval without actually having Benzs' consent. Now that wouldn't make any sense, talk about shooting yourself in the foot!! I think those who investigate this new G-05 A/F will be pleasantly surprised to find it's the exact same thing as the Mercedes brand for several dollars less, and more readily available for a lot of people (like myself). You know something else I'm impressed with concerning AutoZone is their decision to carry the Mobil 1 0W-40. Talk about an oil that is as close to perfect for all climates and types of driving. Close to instant circulation at startup as well as great protection for the heat and lead foots out there. I LOVE IT!! And this coming from a die-hard Amsoil man!! Damn I love progress!! Dale |
