Strange noise from '93 300E (2.8) engine
Hello everyone,
I hear some noise coming from the intake side of the engine (104.942). It seems to originate from that little black plastic box bolted on top of the intake manifold. It sounds like a wornout ball-bearing and the intensity changes when I rev. the engine. The noise was always there however it had a much healthier sound at the time I bought the car, about 50K miles ago. Anyone experienced this? Thanks for your help, Alex |

The black box you're referring to is called the resonance flap. It effectively lengthens the intake runners for optimal performance. Explaining it would take forever and I type real slow! To put it simply, they do wear out and make noise but it's no big deal. You're not going to blow up your motor or anything. I dont know what they cost but it's easy to replace, just four allen screws down thru the top and one electrical connector that can be unplugged after lifting the unit straight up a few inches. Good luck

Thanks for your reply. I did remove the box once to see why it is noisy and to find out what it is for, now I have a better idea. I just called the dealership, it is $380.00 Canadian. I guess I will live with the noise.
