AMG Hammer M117 air intake hose- Help needed
In the process of putting an AMG Hammer wagon back together, and have just put the engine and tranny back in the car. Can't figure out where to draw air from the front of the car.
The air filter housing has the two intakes on either side as on the M117 in the 560. The 560 differs in that one side has a larger intake than the other. (The Euro version may have been different). The 6.0 117 in the Hammer has two equal size intakes. In looking at pictures of my car in 1990 and the other Hammer engine bays, the intakes have flexible tubing like the 560 that drops down behind the grill area. In the 560's I've seen (and the 420's) the tubing pulls air from between the headlight and radiator. Problem is the W124 body is narrower than the 126 and the radiator takes the full space between the lights. I can't figure out where the flexible tubing went in the Hammer engine bay. There is no room to snake down into the airdam, and this would also create a danger of standing water making its' way into the air intake. I would very much prefer not to draw air from inside the engine bay, and I don't want NASCAR ducts in my hood . Has anyone seen a Hammer to know where this tubing went, or can recommend a source for this information? Thanks! |

Check out the 400E and 500E intake set-ups. They have a cover behind the headlights to receive an insulated hose going to the intake. I'll try to take some pictures to show you.

Other W124s take air from between headlight and radiator also. Is your radiator wider than a 300E's? The 300 radiator is huuuuge, I'd be amazed if you could fit anything bigger in there!
Otherwise, i don't suppose it takes air from gashes on the side of the fender at the front, as featured on diesel W124s? later Russ

radiator
The Hammers didn't have the air vents in the fenders as on the diesels, although it was a suggestion that was brought up. The issue would be the need to fabricate a right side fender with the same vents for the other intake side.
The radiator looks to be the same as the 300 unit, the 560 radiator would not fit in the car. If the 300 intake between headlight and radiator can be reversed and used on either side of the radiator as well this could be the solution- Unless of course you could furnish a RHD intake and diesel fender from the UK :p |

whoops
upon closer inspection and comparison with a 300E that was in the shop today the radiator is actually wider and the extra width consumes the few inches between the headlight and radiator. The 300 duct won't fit-
The parts CD for the 400E air cleaner shows two box like devices at the end of each intake tube- I'll have to see where they take in the air |

Install the headlamp rear scoops from the 400E/500E and then run tubing to your dual intakes.
