1988 300SEL no start
No start condition, cranks over.
I pulled the fuel relay, jumped the relay and the puel pump runs, but in crappy kind of way - kind of gurgles, not a smooth usual fuel pump kind of purring. When turning the key, the car still does not engage and run while the relay is jumped. When I remove the jumper wire and crank the engine, the car turns over and kind of wants to start for a millisecond and dies. This does not occur when the relay jumper wire is in place. When I put the fuel pump relay in, the car fuel pump does nothing. No noise or any signs of running. So i am assuming it's s fuel issue. I'm thinking, specifically a fuel pump issue, but wanted some opinions before I buy a fuel pump. Thanks!! Dwayne. |

May be more than one problem, did the car run ok and then this happened? Is there definitely enough fuel in the tank? If yes then the pump may be bad, change it and the filter.
Needing to jump the relay, check and confirm power to and through all fuses. A bad ignition switch can cause no power to close the relay. If there is switched power to the relay then the relay is bad. A failing pump can damage a relay. Good luck!!!

Wanted reply to give an answer to my problem in case others search this thread in the future...
Because of the strange sounds I decided to replace the fuel pump. Seems to have solved the problem. On occasion, it will stall if it sits for a while, but will start right up and remain started. That's another problem for another day. Thanks for all the suggestions. |

Thanks for completing the thread. Is the stalling on a cold start and then it continues to run after a restart?

Np Sugar Bear...my pleasure!!
One thing that drives me a little crazy is when people ask for help and never reveal what the problem was and what corrected the problem...Anyway, the stalling problem occurs when the car sits for over a week. When it stalls, it starts right up after the stall and then the stalling doesn't occur again...unless it sits for more than a week. Thanks again everyone! |

The stalling can be valve seals. Oil buildup and carbon on the valves and spark plugs absorbs the initial supply of gasoline and will cause a one stall situation on start up. Pull the spark plugs and look for fouling build up on one side only of the ceramic insulator. If you find build up on one side only it's probably bad valve seals.
