Getting Code P0705

Hello - Above code is P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction (PRNDL Input). Am I correct to think that is my Shifter (in center console)?

Next - I have seen people here say the Shifter must be bought new (dealer) and programmed by the dealer. Others say a used Shifter can be installed and the car driven with no further fiddling.

Which is correct?
TIA -

Larry

No. But when the C/S option is working I can operate the shifter normally, it still won't upshift but then, when the selector for C/S stops working, the shifter will not move from D to P. We have to turn the key off, then it will go into Park and we can remove the key. It's like I have multiple problems happening at once, and the only code relating to shifting I get is P0705. Other similar threads make me think it's the Shifter assy. (like the video you posted) except I don't get stuck in P.
I basically have 4 problems; A short somewhere that will drain the battery in 24 hours, failure to upshift, unable to select C/S using the button on the console and unable to select P using the shifter. (also had a bad Alt until I recently replaced it). I'm not crazy about this car! ;-\ I really miss my '91 300D that died from rust!
