Swapping transmissions replacing a 7G-tronic to a 9G-tronic?

Looking to start a discussion on the above subject.

I would like to swap / install. 9G-tronic to a OM642 engine{the V6 diesel], the vehicle is a 2008 R320 CDI, 4matic.

This set up / power train was never offered in the US, it was in EU 2013 forward.

Physical / mechanical the transmission should fit.

The larger issue is the programing.

You comments, thoughts or opinions?

Thank you

Joseph~

Have you considered hookers and blow? It might be cheaper.

Because hookers and blow will be more fun?

That is pretty cool you can do your own programming.

Are you writing your own code from scratch? Those later transmissions have to have the authentic MB tools and "phone home" to program the computers. If it isn't an OE configuration and MB doesn't like the VIN configuration, forget getting it flashed with OE software. Pretty sure that's where TJ was coming from with his comment.

Yes, am fully aware.

There are 1,000 of people who log onto MB servers everyday.

All is available for any piece of equipment, not just MB.

I will give you a lead if you are not aware.

I have a feeling the end result won't result in a big enough improvement to have been worth the effort....Now if you were putting in an OM629 or OM656 to replace the OM642 THAT would be fun.

If the combination was offered somewhere in the world - it will work, you just need to make sure the cars gateway can work with the TCU.

It was even done in W140 chassis cars, some people installed the OM606 turbo in them complete with its 5 spd auto and full works like an S300D

I know it was an ancient spec car, but point is that its doable if the car existed with that config in any market, meaning the "programming" will be compatible.

PawoSD why do you not try it? The OM629 or OM656

Are you aware that the OM642 assembly is built into a aviation engine, twin turbo{simmilrer to the OM629] running jet fuel A{kerosene] output of 300hp at 2800 rpm

In the EU 0M642 with 9G-tronic and 4matic in a 5000lb vehicle getting 40mpg, that is what interest me. Some rwd 49 mpg with OM642 and 9G -tronic

I'd probably move on to electric vehicles before I did that much work for a mild performance/economy improvement in a diesel.
