Is the 96 C280 owners manual correct?

In the 96 C280 owners manual it calls for .7 US quarts or .71 liters of rear axle gear lub.

That sounds a little low if you use the fill technique that is recommended by some of the members who suggest to fill until overflow.

What is the best procedure to use. I put in the .7 quarts as stated in the owners manual. Should I add more?

Add it till it runs out. Let it drain until it stops running out then install the plug.

Did the owner's manual say .7 quarts? I remember seeing somwhere that it is supposed to take a little over a quart. You are right, .7 does seem low, and obviously was not enough if there is still space to add more.

Here is the info for my 1995 C280:

1.2 US quarts; 1.1 liters

Hypoid Gear Oil SAE 90, 85w 90

Good luck! BTW, I did use synthetic gear oil when I had mine changed. I actually had to buy 2 bottles because each bottle was 1 quart. THerefor, I got 1 quart of synthetic, and one quart dino. I used all of the synthetic, and filled the remainder with the dino.

I might give the dealer a call to make sure that 1996 MY was the same.
