W126 blower fan removal

Some help from friends needed:

And I mean SPECIFIC help.

On my '88 420 SEL, my blower fan has slowly slowed-down, and is now not operating.

I need to remove it and at least check into status of same.

You need to remove the passenger side kick panel, which I believe is the upper carpeted section.

There are three phillips screws. I removed them, but the panel doesn't budge...and I'm reluctant to try to force it off.

Can someone explicitly direct me on this?

Thanks.

Robert,

If you email me directly, I'll check when I get home. I have the panel off my SDL while I'm waiting for a replacement blower motor.

either of you guys ever figure this one out?

I just posted a message to the same effect.

I am at a stalemate with removal of the blower panel in my SDL.

thanks

I believe the kick panel has to come off first. It's clipped on so you just pry it out.

The lower dash panel is in two sections. The rear carpeted section has three screws into the dash. The forward black section has three screws along the seam with the carpeted section. The inboard screw takes a 90-degree turn to release.

That should do it.

kick panel

By kickpanel, do you mean the carpeted piece that the right ankle of the passenger would touch (attached to the cabin side of the front quarter panel).

I was attempting to remove it by prying with my fingers from the door seal. It wasn't sounding too good. I guess I will try a long screwdriver/prybar from the door seal and hope the plastic doesn't shatter apart.

Let me know if you have any other pointers.

That's the kick panel I meant.

Now that I think about it, it requires a balance of sliding rearward and prying. The car is at home and I'm at work so I'm not 100% sure. One of the tabs in the SDL right kick panel is broken so it came off easily :/

thanks sixto, I got it

A little decisive force helped to pop the kick plate off. Then the panel above came right out. Wow, what a relief.

The brushes for the blower motor are on the end of the tracks that they ride in. I am going to see if I can fabricate some new ones and get a few more years out of this motor.

thanks again
