Why Don't These Euro Headlight Wiper Motors Fit?

My roommate has Euro headlights in his USA 1991 W126 sedan with the original USA wipers and adapters to make them work together. He bought a set of Euro metal panels and motors from Australia. I located a new set of second generation Euro sedan wiper arms and blades.

I went to install these for him this last weekend for his birthday. The Euro motors fit onto the Euro headlights just fine and lined up with the Euro metal panels (which I painted Arctic White to match the body). However, the wiper motor brackets were about 1" too shallow to bolt up to the body and the holes on the body were also misaligned by about 1".

What the heck? Why don't they fit? The part number for the left motor is 126 820 03 42. The right motor is 126 820 04 42. I looked up the part number for a second generation W126 Euro sedan in EPC and it looks like it's actually supposed to have part numbers 126 820 51 42 and 126 820 52 42. I looked up pictures of them on eBay and the brackets for those appear to be 1" deeper and the holes are offset about 1", so obviously they would fit and the Euro W126 motors he has are incorrect (maybe from a coupe?).

I looked up 1st and 2nd generation W126 Euro sedans in EPC and it appears they take the same part number motors (126 820 51 42 and 126 820 52 42). So I looked up 1st and 2nd generation W126 Euro coupes and neither of those part numbers are what are on the Euro motors he has. I still have no idea what W126 the Euro motors he has are supposed to fit, but they are obviously not correct.

Prices for the correct motors (even used) are quite high! So now I am wondering if I should just make adapter brackets to make these fit the body (that's assuming the shaft length and sweep are correct). It's always something!

After MUCH research, I think that the Euro motors he has (126 820 03 42 and 126 820 04 42) fit a 1st generation Euro W126 sedan. Apparently they redesigned the area behind the headlights on the second generation cars. So, we need to locate motors for a second generation Euro sedan (126 820 51 42 and 126 820 52 42).
