The electrical connector can be problematic and known leak issue and when it leaks it passes trans fluid into the ETC electronic transmission control and registers those codes. Take at look at the electrical connector and inspect for leakage. At least eliminate this possibility.

How old is the battery? If the battery is past its expiration date and older than 5 years old, it could very well be the issue at hand. I had similar issues with my W210 with the same transmission (722.6), and the battery made it stay stuck in first gear.

Some googling shows that P0778 on the 772.9 transmission is failure of the B5 solenoid. I think you need a new valve body, as the solenoids are not sold individually. IIRC, this is not a DIY repair, as SDS is required to get the car running again.

^This, most likely. You can read about my similar experience here:

'06 E350 722.9 transmission "sticks" in 1st

Hope this is helpful,
-Chris

EDIT: For anyone who reads the linked thread, the car is now at about 94,400 and I have had no additional transmission issues. I had a fluid/filter change done at the dealer for the 91,000 mile service.
