Has anyone shot at "bullet proof" double pane MB door glass?

I've seen lots of used car ads over the years touting the MB double pane door glass as bullet proof. The double pane is for noise reduction from the road tests of the day.

Anyone ever take a shot at this glass? I'm expecting it to break like any other tempered glass.

It WILL break like any other glass. It isn't bulletproof.

It's just a great claim for spoofing a Craigslist ad. Of course, people fall for it.

people fall for this BS

I went to see a car advertised on CL - its a W210 - 2001, the owner says that the key just stopped working a few moments ago, engine is dead cold and dusty (not grime but sitting dust), cobwebs on the wheels, rusted rotor faces.

yep a few moments ago. Didnt know you work on snail time.

nearly all ads I see for W140 say bulletproof glass. lol

Do you not believe that claim along with the one that says it gets 45 MPG on free waste cooking oil.

No such thing as "Bullet Proof" glass. The correct terminology in the industry is "Bullet Resistant."

I take it you are talking about the regular glass installed in Mercedes sold off dealer car lots (and not the "armored" Mercedes)?

Here is an armored car...

I once looked at a 600SEL for sale by an unlicensed pharmacist and he kept insisting that the car was bulletproof, I was looking for a V12 140 not protection, so I disregarded that part of the ad, but in person he kept stressing that this was bulletproof. I told him if he'd let me shoot one of the windows and it stopped the bullet, I would pay his asking price in cash.

He declined my offer and stopped mentionning it.

When I determined the A/C was broken, I rolled out.

The glass was for sound insulation and had nothing to do with being bullet resistant. I know it isn't the factory bible, but someone has it correct on Wikipedia here.

That CL ad is a classic case of how these internet legends won't die. Someone notes that an S class has heavy, thick window glass, and assumes it is BP glass. It isn't. MB had a "Guard" edition of the S class, but the chance that this car is actually one of those is miniscule.

Chris W.
