Question 1991 300E Transmission Slip

The transmission on my 3.0 M103 is slipping at take off. The engine revs and it moves slowly from a stop for a few seconds until it grabs. It grabs a little quicker if I put the shifter in 2 before starting. It did this a few times last summer but its been ok since. Last week I ran it pretty fast in reverse for a hundred feet or so followed by a hard stop. It started slipping a few days later. The rest of the gears shift normally.

I got the car at 193K miles and I've put 40K on it. The fluid level is right and the fluid looks and smells good. I've been meaning to change the fluid and filter but some of the threads I've read here make me think I should leave it to my indy, but I'd like to save the $$$ if I can. Any chance new fluid could help? What about adjustments? I have access to the Startek manuals but the maintenance procedures for the transmission aren't available. Are there any articles or threads that I should read before I go at it myself?

Thanks.

Update: What is or how do I find out the trans number?
