Please help Can't see through headrests w210 1998 E320
The pump for the door locks and such has failed in my 1998 E320 abse model. The other ady the kids pulled the rear headrest up and now I can't get them down using the button on the the dash. anyway, there has to be another way to release the headrests. I have tried pulling eacg line off of the pump and applying both suction and pressure to each line to no avail. Please help my wife can't see out of the back window with the headrests up.
Thanks

Is this a US model? I wasn't aware of any 1998 W210s with rear automatic headrests. How is the switch labelled?
Normally, pressing the lock on the rear head rest allows it to be lowered all the way or lifted out. There is also a storage area underneath the edge of the seat cushion where the center head rest can be stored. The chrome rods are inserted and the support part rests on the center 'hump'.

So when the headrests are raised they lock into place. To lower them the button on the dash is pushed and the headrest are released allowing them to fall back down with gravity. I am looking for a manual way to lower the headrest as the button is not working (pump is dead). Please help!!!!

Is the pump really dead? There is a little hose inside it that can fall off, then it doesn't work, but that isn't "dead". If you take the end off you can see, I think there may be a write-up in the 140 forum at benzworld.
With the key on, apply vacuum to the line while someone pushes that dash button. I think that should do it, it has to release a catch as well as activate the pump/circuit. Me, I'd check out the pump first. Good luck. Last edited by Can't Know; 04-01-2012 at 05:09 AM. |

If you can find where the vacuum line goes in to the release element, and if you have a hand vacuum pump (mityvac or whatever) you should be able to just apply vacuum and they should drop down i believe. Or if you can easily get to them, if you find out the code for "headrest" on the PSE pump you could apply vacuum there as well?

In Richard signature he says he has a 210 wagon, and it seems like what he is describing is a wagon (as far as storing the headrest), I am sure nckmsn is describing a sedan. It is fairly common, I would be willing to state that either the car had headrests, and they were power folding like this, or the car had no rear headrests at all, I don't think there was a non-power folding headrest on a 210 sedan at all.

Yeah i sure don't recall ever seeing a mechanical rear headrest on a 210 sedan, but I do recall the storage "sockets" on the leading edge of the wagon lower cushion like what you are describing, because you had to get the rear headrests out of the way to fold the backrests down.

nckmsn, I think if you spent some "real comfortable" time on your back in the trunk you might see what releases the headrests, you might possibly have to remove the back seat backrest to see the mechanism.

The switch on the dash should only be operating the PSE pump, the switch won't matter. The trick is to ID what the abbreviation is on the PSE pump, they are all identified by 2 or 3 letters. maybe the net will reveal an answer.
