1994 C220 W202 Battery Not Charging

This past weekend while driving from New Haven to NYC I experienced an issue where i ran out of charge on my battery. As i was driving, i noticed that the lights were dimming and my radio stopped working. The cluster was showing that the SRS light had come on (dimly) and the ABS light came on. The car then proceeded to stall out and would not turn back on. After waiting for 5 to 10 minutes the car would restart, and drive for about 1/4 of a mile before dieing again.

I was able to get it towed to the closest place that would work on a sunday (pep boys) and had them check the battery/alternator figuring that the alternator was most likely dead as the battery was about 7 months old and given how the battery was marginally coming back to life. When tested this morning I was told that both were OK. They charged the battery and i bought a second one and i went though both getting back to New Haven.

Is there any "quick" things that i should check for, other than trying to search everywhere conceivable for a shorted wire?

Most likely a bad voltage regulator.
