gas/ fuel smell in interior 2005 E55

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what this could be..
I have a 2005 E55 and this morning when I opened the car I smelled a strong gas/ fuel odor on the inside of the car only. There was no fuel smell in the garage or in the trunk. I could not imagine why this would be so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also I drove the car and everything seems fine and then again after parking it for an hour or so and retuning to the car I smell the same odor however upon driving it seems to go away and not return until after the car has been sitting for any length of time. Also FYI there has been no recent service performed on the car.
Thanks!
Jerome

Fuel Smell - Filler Cap Seal

If it only happens with a full tank check the filler cap seal.

Answer

Potential safety issue, take it to the dealer for inspection.

A fuel vapor fire/explosion could terminate your day.

If the problem only happens when the tank is full, either one of the fuel level sender seals has failed, or the fuel is leaking up through the electrical connector for the pump and/or tank pressure sensor. Either way, a special spanner is needed so it's probably not a DIY job.

Known problem area on the E55. There is a recall, so check with MB or the dealer to see if your car has been addressed. Lots of information on this over at mbworld.org - there's a good size 211 AMG community there.

Solutions have ranged from a new gasket for the fuel pump/sending unit (cheap), to a new fuel pump/sending unit (not cheap), to a new fuel tank (expensive!).

Good luck.
