1995 w124 Aux fan issue
1995 w124.
I noticed that the temp was going up to about 110 degree in stop and go traffic. temp was coming back down to 100 when in motion and then creeping back up whenever i stop. i just replaced fan clutch housing, fan clutch, pulley, fan blades last week - previous fan clutch bearing seized etc. anyway, i open the hood and notice that the aux fans are not coming on. i have my AC on full blast (Texas) - AC is cold as usual - but temp is creeping up whenever I stop. I read some previous threads about aux fans & this is what I have found so far. I remove the temp sensor connector with key on and fans don't come on. mine is the later model one with four connector pins I jump the AC sensor pigtails and fans come on at low speed. I checked freon and gauge shows it on green. I checked fuses - all ok. temporary solution - i left the AC pig tails connected to keep the aux fans on all the time since my AC is on all the time anyway. temp is staying between 85 and 95. 1) how do i test the four pin temp sensor on the thermostat housing? most threads in this forum discuss the older blue sensor which had two connector pins. So does the same test apply for the newer four pin connector - ie should the fans automatically come on as soon as i disconnect the connector? 2) how do i reach the relays - i unscrewed the cover and exposed the relays but the relays are buried under the housing just below the windscreen - i can get my hand in there but there is no room to pull relays up and out - I'm sure MB designed the car knowing that the relays had to come out at some point so there must be an easier way to get to the relays out... 3) what else should i check for.... |

Maybe this post will help you.
Aux Fans Inop on E420 There is a picture of the two relays in my 94 E420. If yours looks like mine, the relays will come out if you gently lift them with a small screwdriver while the key is off. Just remember which position each relay occupies. The later models had fuses in the relays as you can see from the picture. If it's not the relays, then I would look into the wire connection of the dropping resistor behind the front left headlight. The wire connectors get corroded and need to be cleaned/renewed every few years. Arthur Dalton was/is the guru of the a/c system and has helped a lot of people on this site with their fan issues. His advice has been invaluable. I sure miss seeing his posts.
