Question 1989 300E Shifter Interlock??

Greetings from a newbie...

Just purchased my first Benz 2 days ago. An 89 300E with 104k. Immaculate inside and out. Was surprised to discover last night that I can shift from Park to any other gear, without having my foot on the brake. Furthermore, I can even move the shift lever with the engine off! Is there really no interlock on the 89's or do I have a problem? Did a search but no definitive answer as best I can find.

Thanks in advance!
Mike.

Retrofit?

Thanks MBDOC!

Yes, I remember the headlines, having just sold my 4000 manual tranny at the time. Any way to retrofit at reasonable cost? Have two younger kids, and its a nice piece of added safety in that situation.

Thanks,
Mike.

I have not seen an answer posted and seached around... I've been trying to find an answer to this too? My wife will not drive the 87TD with the kids, as it can shift out of gear so easily without pushing the brake pedal.

Can this be swapped from a 1990+ car easily? What is involved?

I think it's the "brake pedal shift interlock" cable, but do I need to get a different brake pedal and /or shifter to adapt it?
