W126 dash board light out
Hey all again, this comes up every once and a while, so I figured maybe I'll put an end to it. Every couple starts, my very right most light on the dashboard behind the steering wheel is out until I tap on the window once or twice. This has been going on for quite a while now. Most likely something is loose, how can I check this out correctly?

If tapping does thr trick, then I'm sure the bulb connection is loose. How can you check this out? By dismantling and re-connect the points.

The instrument cluster pulls straight out. There are some special tools that MB sells for this purpose. The bulb filament is probably broken. Ofter times the ends touch back together and the bulbs works until it is turned off and it recieves some sort or mechanical shock which seperates the filament ends. Then if power is applied and the ends happen to touch due to some vibration the bulb comes on and the filament expands and maintains the connection until it is again turned off. It becomes very intermittant is what Im trying to say.
I can post photos of the tools which are easily home made. And a photo of where to catch the cluster using the tool. Let me know if you want to do that. Photos are on this post; How to remove instrument cluster.

More power to you for doing the repair yourself. Even though I had the shop manual describing the repair procedure I could not summon the courage to do it myself.
I was too worried about the outside temperature display, and whether it might suffer during the bulb repair. That is known to be a very expensive replacement part. Maybe I was too cautious, but it was a $50 job at the mechanic. If you diy, be sure to replace all of the bulbs. Regards, Tom
