W126 1986 420SEL blower fan not working
I did a search and tried various things:
a) checked the fuse - the fuse base seems to have disintegrated - the fuse was positioned lower and looked like the base had burnt up; as a temporary measure I melted solder into the base, replaced the fuse and still no blower function - I read about a kit that might be available to move the fuse out of the fuse box (that was a MY 1987 change) - does anyone know a part number for that kit, or what it's called? b) I removed the blower motor to check the brushes - no problem with them. c) the blower does not respond to banging on it as some have suggested. Anything else I should try - I am at a loss as to what to do next. Thanks.

You can test the motor with a 14v drill battery. Then you'll know if it's the motor or a wiring issue.

it's probably the blower motor regulator[that porcupine looking thing thats mounted beside the blower motor.you can check it because it provides the ground wire to the blower.just get a big solid wire and run from the batt ground to the ground wire conn on the motor.motor should run.

I just replaced my blower motor with a pick n pull donor. I tested my original motor beforehand, and it actually worked after disconnecting and reconnecting the positive and negative leads on the motor. During testing though, one of the oxidized leads broke off, and while running, it made a little noise. I thought it best to go ahead and replace it with the newer motor(1990 vs, 1984). It was an easy job and I was so glad it was nothing more serious.
Edit: And, my 1984 126 500SEL did not originally have a blower regulator(porcupine).... so if you need one of those I have one off of the donor car(which was a low mileage 1990 w126). Another edit: In my 1984, the fusible link to the blower motor is actually in the engine compartment, not behind the firewall. It is a black cylindrical holder that clips shut, with a wire out of each end. I barely touched the link/fuse, and it fell apart. So, you might have it and just not seen it yet. I spliced a 30 amp fuse holder into place, and it seems to be working fine. Last edited by shawnh; 10-12-2010 at 01:40 PM. |

Working again!
Good news. I rewired the fuse connection and added a 30A external fuse holder after drilling two holes in the side of the fuse box to thread the wiring connections. That was the culprit. It works well now. Thanks for all the answers. My porcupine seems to be fine!

Removed blower motor, took out brushes, they were longer than the ones I bought. Blower runs on direct connect, so I need porcupine. Do you still have it? Terms? Jim in GSO,NC |
