Hydraulic lifter noise with cold starts

Hey all, was just wondering if it's normal or it means something is wearing out and needs replacing, every so often when I start the 91 300E I have the hydraulic lifters make noise for a about 3-4 seconds and then shuts off, VERY rarely does it stay on for longer than that, usually happens more if it's been sitting on an incline all night, it is with cold starts only.

Anything to give a second though to?

I have an 190E with the same engine. One of the lifters has been making noise for over a year now- also on cold starts then it goes away in ten minutes or so.

From what others have said, it's nothing critical but if you can get around to replacing it then definitely do it. I think it just means the lifters are getting stuck but once the engine reaches operating temp the noise goes away.

Alright cool, yeah mines been doing it for awhile now also, just wondering if it was anything to worry about. So what exactly would need to be replaced, just the hydrolic lifter?

I've had a '91 300e for 12 years...never, ever ticked. ...and I had serviced it for previous owner since 1994.

You cannot take the elements apart. New if needed.

You will need to check how soon oil pressure rises on cold start-up with a Master Gauge.

The electronic sender my be lying to you. Next run 0W30 oil through it with a Mercedes oil filter...you may have a filter that drains being as they are upside down.

Oil filter is often the problem.

I've been using a Bosch oil filter the last two oil changes I believe, I don't feel its the best thing I am using, what do you use? Oil wise I been running Delo and this last one Rotella 15w-40, it ticked before we got it and they were using a white napa filter.

How much do you pay for a Mercedes oil filter? I heard it was just like 10$ or something?

If the oil filter you are using says BOSCH and is black...it is NOT a Bosch filter. It is made by Champion Oil Filters IIRC.

I use NAPA Gold if German made not available...ie" Knecht or Mann. I have been to the Mann factory in Germany and they made a good product.

Knecht and Metal Leve are part of the MAHLE Corp..

The important thing about the 300e oil filter is that it has a non-return valve because it is installed upside down compared to the usual mounting of an oil filter.

BTW...to stop draining the filters contents down the back of the engine when you unscrew the filter..( Applies to 260e and 300e only.)..punch a hole in the filter can before you drain the oil pan...then, when you unscrew the filter, you find most of the oil has drained out....that is, drained back into the engine, not out onto the drive way !
