400E Tune up Recommendations

Hey guys, I am getting ready to change my Plugs and Oil. I am wondering if anyone has a specific weight and brand of oil for a 400E with 146,000 miles on it. Also I would like to put high quality spark plugs in and would like some input on those as well.

Try to get an oil that is NOT the newer "SM" standard. Try to get one that is the older "SL" standard instead. All the "SM"s say they also meet "SL", but they are NOT the same and they are NOT as good. They have reduced levels of ZDDP (zinc phosphate). I've noticed that Royal Purple synthetic is still "SL" but you better check to be sure. I'm running some old Amsoil that I have a stash of that is "SL" but I don't know if their new stuff still is. Also, don't go too thin, I wouldn't go any thinner than 10W-40.

I'm been running a set of Bosch platinums for over 4 years now. The ones that have 2 ground electrodes. Love em. Everybody else is gonna tell you not to run them. None of them has a 400E that runs mid 14s in total street trim with 2 child seats in the back.

Spark plug wires are a very overlooked part on these cars. People mistakenly think they last forever. They don't. Both my 93 400E and my 95 E420 had very bad, arcing, spark plug wires when I bought them. Check yours.
Regards, Eric

Look on the label ....that is only "SM" oil son. Not good. That's too thin too. The car is running good in spite of that oil, not because of it.

Iridiums sound good though! Although I'm sure there's people here who don't like them cause they're not "approved" by the factory..... never mind the fact that Iridiums weren't even out back then!

Did you check your spark plug wires?
Regards, Eric

Well I was trying to find information on proper oil and I couldn't even find the proper weight. The oil looked like tar and smelled like a 2 stroke so I didn't want to wait any longer. I also don't know what 'SM' and 'SL' refers to...

Plug wired seem to be in really good shape I am almost positive that it has a new wiring harness and new plug wires.
